What is an MCC file?
MCC is the caption file format created for MacCaption and CaptionMaker, the captioning applications originally from CPC (Computer Prompting & Captioning) and now part of Telestream. Where SCC stores only CEA-608 data, MCC stores complete caption distribution packets (CDPs). These are the structures used to carry captions in the ancillary data (VANC) of SDI video, and each one can carry CEA-708 digital caption data alongside the CEA-608 compatibility bytes.
That makes MCC the usual choice when a delivery needs real 708 captions, or when captions must be embedded into a master at 23.976, 25 or 59.94 fps rather than 29.97. Like SCC, an MCC file is plain text with a timecode on every line, but the data after it is a hex-encoded, lightly compressed CDP rather than 608 byte pairs.
A header at the top of the file records the format version, a UUID, the program that created it and the time code rate. Encoders, video servers and editing tools that read MCC use that header to interpret the timecode correctly.

00:00:00;00 …hex-encoded caption distribution packet…Why MCC instead of SCC
- 708 captions. Many broadcast and OTT specifications require CEA-708 data, which SCC cannot carry.
- Frame rate. MCC timecode can match a 23.976, 25 or 59.94 fps master directly, without a 29.97 conversion step.
- Embedding. MCC maps one-to-one onto the CDPs that encoders insert into VANC, so it embeds cleanly into file-based masters.

MCC questions
Yes. The CEA-608 data in the MCC file is extracted and written as SCC. Any CEA-708-only content, such as additional 708 services or 708 window styling, has no place in SCC and is not carried over. See MCC to SCC.
It can contain both. Each caption distribution packet carries 608 compatibility bytes and 708 service data. The 608 and 708 options in Closed Caption Converter control which services are written.
MacCaption and CaptionMaker, Telestream Vantage and many broadcast encoders and video servers read MCC. Adobe Premiere Pro can import MCC caption files.
